The delicate white flowers of purple shamrock bloom every year in the middle of March. The word shamrock comes from the Irish word seamróg meaning “little clover”. Shamrock is also known as the “Love Plant” due to its heart shaped leaves and the plant’s association with fertility. St. Patrick used the plant with its leaves of three as metaphor to teach his followers the theological concept of the divine triad. Hence, the shamrock its’ close cousin the clover are considered by some to be a holy plant. The tradition of wearing Shamrock on Saint Patrick’s Day to bring good luck and prosperity can be traced back to the early 1700s. The odds of finding the four leaf variety of the plant are ten thousand to one.
